DMG media group
The DMG media group is the company that owns the Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday, the Mail online, The Metro, Metro.co.uk and they also used to own the evening standard but still incorporates them under their company. They also own a majority stake in the estate agents zoopla, Mail travel, Mail today (a newspaper in India), 7 days (a newspaper in Dubai), the jobsite and Wowcher ( a site for vouchers).
The company structure has the Viscount Rothermere as the chairman, the chief exec as Kevin Beaty, and the editor in chief is Paul Dacre. The Daily Mail dose reflect it's owners views being that Rothermere descends from the original owner of the Daily Mail. The Daily Mail is their biggest seller being the second bestselling paper in the UK and the Mail Online is one of the biggest news websites in the world. Along with that the Metro has good numbers because it’s free having about a million readers per week and the mail on Sunday is the second biggest Sunday newspaper.
The company has quite against the norm actually founded most of their papers with the Daily Mail being launched in 1909 and the Metro being launched in 1999. They are a for profit organisation and are on the stock exchange.
The style of their papers is slightly different, The Mail is more geared to a middle class, middle age, conservative audience who want to read about celebrity drama and generally take an hour reading it with a lot of opinion pieces , where as the Metro is very straight to the point and precise because it's designed for people looking for something to keep their attention whilst they're going to somewhere on the train.
GMG Media and the Scott Trust
Founded in 1939, the Scott Trust was founded by John Scott the scott trust owns GMG media who owns the Guardian and the observer. The Trust was set up to protect the paper and keep it away from any party affiliation. The Trust has a board consisting of Alex Graham who is the the chairman, Katherine Viner who is the editor in chief at guardian media limited, David Pemsel who is the chief executive at guardian media limited and 9 other members.
Contrasting with DMG media who is a large conglomerate whose main goal is to make money. The trusts main goal is to keep the guardian a paper free from the pressures of rich owners so it can be independent. They however aren't a very profitable company since the Guardian paper doesn't get anywhere near the numbers of the Daily Mail or Sun. On the Website they ask for donations to keep the paper free and open.
The Guardian is very political and very left leaning. It appeals to a upper class left leaning audience. They're style is very editorial with a lot of large articles from people who hook you're attention and even if you don't agree with their stances they do make a good read.
I think the main difference between these two organisations apart from the material they print is that the Scott Trust do care more about a free and open media. And The Scott Trust do at least care about the public and "the little guy" and are a lot more dedicated to politics than stuff like celebrity drama.
