past covers of underground music magazines (and how they create audience appeal)

  • All of the magazines use high quality images which predominantly take up the page not being intruded on by cover lines or logos. This creates audience appeal by making the magazine much more visually interesting additionally looking unconventional which appeals to underground music fans since they are looking for unconventional products such as them liking unconventional artists

  • All of the magazines have musical artists who have not had huge mainstream appeal but have a lot of respect from hardcore underground audiences . Wax Poetical for instance use Jennele Monae an artist who has only had one top 40 hit in her career but in underground music scenes is very acclaimed. This means underground music fans will immediately recognise the artist and want to read about them.

  • Underground music magazines use unique styles to give the magazines unqiue aesthetic. For instance WP has designed their magazine to have a unique 60s font font which creates an overall 60s motown aesthetic which harkens back to a signal of black pride in music. This creates audience appeal by giving the magazine it's own unique identity which underground music fans will find to be appealing
